Con Edison Leads Adoption of Vacuum-Insulated Secondary Windows in NYC

In December 2024, ConEd implemented a first-of-its-kind window upgrade at its NYC headquarters, transforming single-glazed windows into triple-glazed vacuum-insulated systems without replacement. The pilot installation in the CFO’s office used INOVUES’ patent-pending breathable SWR system paired with LuxWall’s vacuum-insulated glass, maintaining the building’s historic appearance while preventing condensation and preserving daylight.

Independent measurement verification (M&V) revealed that INOVUES’ secondary windows improved thermal performance from R1 to R9+, delivering substantial energy savings at a fraction of the cost of window replacement. Following the success of this pilot, ConEd decided to expand deployment of INOVUES’ solution at its headquarters.

Performance Table

The performance metrics were validated via independent M&V. A modified ASTM C1046 procedure was used for on-site thermal evaluation (heat flux measurement) on multiple windows.

Footnotes.

  1. U-value and R-value were evaluated based on the ASTM E1155 protocol.

  2. Based on a 5-year weather data model (Central Park). Calculation is based on 12 months of data including heating and cooling seasons. Heat loss is only accounting for conduction loss/gain only.

  3. Per Con Edison’s Commercial and Industrial (C&I) energy efficiency 2025 incentive program.

  4. Simple payback after utility incentives. Does not factor in escalation rates or federal tax deduction.
